2017 LA Regional Botball Competition: SBHS Robotics Team won 1st place in the Alliance Matches and took home the award for the Most Ambitious Design!

Four members of the Santa Barbara High School Computer Science Robotics team, (Eli Bauer, Diego Vasquez, Beck Dehlsen, and Jared Fitton) went to the 2017 Greater Los Angeles Regional Botball Competition. The competition was put on by KIPR (KISS Institute for Practical Robotics) and was held at Providence High School in Burbank CA. The small size of the team didn’t stop them from making a big showing at the competition. The team placed first in the Alliance Matches and also took home the award for the Most Ambitious Design. The Most Ambitious Design was awarded for their large bot, (shown below) which was arguably the most entertaining bot at the competition. The large bot’s design was anything but ordinary as its approach was to exploit the game board layout to achieve a large point multiplier. The team’s strategy was ingenious and truly displayed their talents.

The team’s design of the larger bot was a great example of the ambitious approach they took to the competition. The second seeding round was a testament to the team’s true potential as they received the second highest score overall, even with a partial malfunction of their small bot. The team gained some invaluable experience from this year’s competition, so it will be exciting to see how they perform next year.
